What is cadmium glass?

Cadmium glass, also known as uranium-cadmium glass or selenium-cadmium glass, is a type of glass which has been produced since the mid-19th century. It contains cadmium or cadmium oxide, which gives it a distinctive yellow or green color. This type of glass was often used in antique glassware, such as depression glass, and is still manufactured today for use in art glass and jewelry making.

Cadmium glass is also known for its high level of radioactivity, due to the presence of uranium and thorium as impurities. Although the radioactivity is typically very low, it can still pose a health hazard with prolonged exposure. For this reason, cadmium glass should always be handled with care and not used for food or drink.

Despite the potential risks, cadmium glass remains popular among collectors and artisans due to its unique coloration and historical significance. Many antique pieces are highly valued by collectors, while modern versions are used in everything from art glass to decorative household items.
